Have Your Child Learn Self-Discipline!

It’s the little things that we miss
[Ignoring mom and eating more than 2 cookies
Buying something you didn’t plan on
Having a mean comment put you in a bad mood
Getting onto Facebook too often during study hours
Letting self to not finish a book]

Before they escalate.
[Consuming an entire plate even though full
Having a closet full of unused and old stuff
Pushing over your brother because he hit you first
Lacking the ability to concentrate
Dismissing a goal]

But with a little self-discipline,
[Watching your portions
Making effort to give and save
Calming down
Avoiding distractions
Pushing through]

You happily accept the consequences!
[Looking good
Being good
Feeling good
Clapping good
Mighty good]

. . .

Self-discipline is the key when training at Choe's HapKiDo in Grayson. Students learn to tackle all situations with perseverance, decision making, and good attitude. Watch your child grow within a year’s worth training. You’ll notice a big change in your child’s stride.

Confidence is Necessary

. . .

The truth about lack-of-confidence is that it has no age limit; it is a feeling that both children and adults relate to. At Choe’s HapKiDo in Grayson, we understand that the reasons for lack of confidence are endless, but they are reasonable: the feeling of inadequacy compared to others; a history of negative feedback; the fear of being wrong; the idea of set-limitations. Our martial art program is developed to show students how to grow in confidence.

The Outcomes of Confidence:

SELF-ESTEEM BOOST. From day to day training, HapKiDo instructors make sure a student knows when something is done right. Through hard work and a positive attitude, students experience the feeling of being correct. And after one technique is conquered, students find energy to keep at it.

REALIZED POTENTIAL. The best part of watching progression in the training studio is when the student realizes it. It is like suddenly, a light bulb flashes and he/she witnesses the growth. Maybe an increase in strength is noticed, or a kick is flawless. But regardless, seeing the changes influences the want to do more.

NEW FOUND INDEPENDENCE. The instructors train students every step of the way until they believe he/she is ready for the next belt test. The belt tests allow students to perform independently. And after a new belt is achieved, it is understood that it was earned.

Although confidence can result in cockiness and false-pride, consistent training results in the students developing confidence in a healthy way. From being corrected on technique and etiquette, students learn that perfection comes from listening to advice and persevering to try again and again.

Never give up on yourself

Laura Brownlee here, your local ilovekickboxing.com instructor!!

Today I want to talk to you about the way you view yourself. We are our own worst enemies in most cases. We think poorly of ourselves or have a negative image of what we see in ourselves, which causes us to not rise to our highest potential.

Why is it easier to believe the bad about ourselves instead of the good? I don’t know, but what I do know is, that your mind is a very powerful tool. You can use it to build yourself up and achieve things that you didn’t think were possible. Maybe you’re struggling to lose ten pounds; maybe you don’t think you’re as good as someone else, maybe you haven’t started working out because you feel insecure.

I want to encourage you today to shake all that off and put on a new attitude about you!! Believe that you are everything you dream to be. Set goals and reach them!

It will not always be easy, as a matter of fact; it will probably take you out of your comfort zone and be some of the hardest things you’ve ever had to do. But you will realize what you’re made of and how much you truly can achieve. Determination, hard work, dedication and heart are what it takes to be successful. I’m not talking about money success either, don’t get me wrong, that’s great, but to me, success is not measured in money it’s measured in the quality of your life. Are you happy? Are you reaching towards your goals? Are you taking steps every day to become a better you?

You are only limited by what you believe you can achieve!!!!

Benefits of Music during your workout!

Hey guys! Lori Nieves here, your ilovekickboxing.com instructor! I wanted to talk to you today about the benefits of rocking out to music during your workout.

Music can be fun to jam to but there have been several studies about the benefits of music while you’re working out.  Music helps to reduce your perceived effort which makes you think that you’re not working as hard as you are during your workout.  Also, if you match the tempo of your music to your workout, it can boost your endurance and your workout’s efficiency! It also boosts the effort that you put into your workout which makes you push yourself longer and harder. That, of course, will increase your results, and who doesn’t want to do that!!!!

One problem, if you get too used to the music that you use to work out to, it loses many of these benefits according to recent information from Billboard and Spotify.  If you want to keep going, you should change up your music every few weeks. We use the Songza app (for iphone and android) with the “ drop a beat” category, which plays new music all the time.

Check out this cool infographic about the types of music that most people find effective for different types of workouts ranging from yoga to running.  While there’s no kickboxing specifically, you’ll notice the gym, tae-bo, and jogging seem to have similar attributes.

You can also check this site out that has many up tempo playlists to fit your mood and preferences. There’s even a kickboxing category with several “beat down” playlists!!

Here are a few of my favorites that get me pumped up and ready to kick butt:

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis – Can’t Hold Us

Capital Cities – Safe and Sound

Beyonce – Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)

Michael Jackson – Beat It

Britney Spears – Work B*tch (Work Work for those with little ears around)

If there’s anything you want to hear during a workout, let me know and I’ll track it down for you.

Do you trust your trainer(?).....you should!

Hi everyone, it's Lori Nieves, your ilovekickboxing.com instructor!!!!

We all know it’s important to develop relationships with others in order to express ourselves openly.  In fact, trust is a fundamental way in which we work with, communicate with, hear, and learn from each other.  Rapport, and in turn a trusting relationship, is also the key to a positive relationship with trainers and coaches.

The opposite is true as well.  A lack of trust, including low morale, low productivity, and failure to give 100% can lead to the end of a productive relationship with your trainer or coach.  Without a positive and trusting relationship, it will be far more difficult for us to reach our goals.

Here are some questions that you should be asking yourself to determine if you have a trusting relationship with your trainer.

1.      Does your trainer focus on you rather than herself?

2.      Does your trainer work with you collaboratively to reach your goals rather than tell you what your goals should be?

3.      Do you feel validated or understood by your trainer?

Our goal at ILKB is that you answer yes to all of these questions.  After all, it’s our goal to help you reach yours.

Getting The Most Out of Your Workout

A popular fitness magazine published an article entitled “11 Ways to Burn More Calories.” Read through the list and notice how many of them are integral to every single ilovekickboxing class. Check this out!

Exercising on a Full or Empty Stomach – the recommendation here is to have at least some food in your system for your workout. This provides some reserves for your muscles to work at peak performance and increases fat burn rates as compared to not having eaten prior to exercise. Use good judgment in timing and in amounts to eat and get to know your body. High quality inputs give your body the nutrients it needs to burn the most fat and calories.

Upper-Body or Lower Body – everyone wants those strong, sculpted arms. Fortunately, all muscle groups are worked on in every ILKB class. But it’s those big muscle groups that help burn the most calories. So embrace every lunge, squat, and burpee (everyone’s favorite) especially when jumps are added, not to mention all the great heavy bag work, and know that you are maximizing your efforts for fat and calorie burn along with muscle strengthening.

Slow and Steady or Interval Training – the article states that, “alternating between periods of all-out effort and rest, it lets you go harder, longer, to burn the same number of calories in about half the time as you would with steady state exercise.” Studies even suggest that high intensity intervals can boost your metabolism for 14 hours. Every ILKB class has those high intensity bursts separated by a short rest, whether in the conditioning portion of class or the heavy bag work. It’s awesome to catch your breath while your instructor explains the next combo so you can go all out til the next one – this is high intensity interval training!

Working Out By Yourself or With Others – this one is rather self-explanatory. Our ILKB family loves to work out together. We all encourage each other and push each other to go harder even when we don’t realize that’s what we are doing.

Starting Your Workout with Static or Dynamic Stretches – the article recommends that light jogging or butt kicks keeps your muscles strong instead of static “bend and hold” stretches. So all that conditioning at the beginning of every ILKB class keeps you strong so you can use proper form and burn more calories.

Doing the Same Workout Every Day or Switching It Up – switching it up wins out. The amazing variety in every ILKB class makes it easy to switch up your workout. Even though the number of basic kicks and punches is relatively small and easy to learn, the variety of combos makes every class new and different, challenging your body to keep up and burn more calories.

Strength Training or Cardio First – putting strength training before cardio exercise is said to burn the most calories. There are two energy systems your body uses to convert food to energy: anaerobic (stored energy) and aerobic (converting fat to energy.) They do not work independently, but generally strength training (the conditioning part of ILKB classes) uses up anaerobic energy and cardio training (the heavy bag work) dips deep into the aerobic system. So even the order of the class is designed to provide the most effective workout for your efforts.

For those who want to experience a happier life and a fit body, the most important rule about exercising is consistency. A consistent workout will help reduce stress and increase your mental well-being. One secret to slowing down the aging process is exercise! When you work out regularly, your mind will experience a greater relaxation and the body will be in a better mood due to endorphins. Have you ever noticed when you go for a long period of time without working out, and your energy levels are down and your mood isn't that happy? Well they are linked! It is important to keep your exercising regime on point so that you are physically and mentally in shape- it helps to get a good night rest, too. Physically, you will be toner, your skin will be more elastic (younger looking), your muscles will begin to develop, your bones will strengthen and you will have a better flexibility with a regular exercise routine.

It is important to note that when your exercise for 5 hours one day because you won’t be able to for the next two weeks, it won’t help- it will only make you sore. Create a realistic exercise routine that you can always have and possible different work-outs so that it won’t get boring. Some risks for not exercising can be detrimental to your health, like coronary disease, strokes, high blood pressure, little energy, overweight, breathlessness, osteoporosis, and simply a flabby body. Don’t get discouraged, this year eat better, exercise more and be happier which will give you the confidence to be a better you!

Kick Stress's Butt!

Kick Stress’s BUTT!

Alright y’all. Here we go. A lot of you may not know this but I’m a mental health therapist
for my day job. While many of my clients have serious mental health illness, environmental
factors often worsen their symptoms. Stress levels and people’s abilities to manage their
stress not only impacts their mental health but is also of great importance for their physical
health.

When the body is exposed to a stressor, a series of hormones are secreted. Initially this
gives you extra energy (think fight or flight) which is super helpful if you’re being chased by
a tiger or someone tries to attack you in a dark ally. The hormones are then supposed to
help your body return to normal. Typically this means eating to replenish the energy and
calories you burned by kicking your attacker’s ass and delivering a sequence of perfectly
performed kickboxing skills to the attacking tiger.

Unfortunately, you don’t always have the opportunity to use your highly refined and effective
cross, hook, uppercut, side kick combination when faced with stressors. Today’s world is
hectic and, yes, stressful. You have the kids’ HapKiDo (or ballet if you have a little princess
like me), school/work, cooking delicious yet healthy meals for your family, making sure your
pets are cared for, the leaky toilet, and hundreds of other little things to occupy your mind
each day. It’s no wonder we’re all stressed.

While your stress response hormone system works really well for physical dangers, most
modern day stressors don’t just last for a few minutes and the hormones that are supposed
to help out body return to normal stayed elevated. Here’s something that you may not have
known - chronic stress leads to increased appetite. As many of us know too well, that often
leads to weight gain – I know if did for me.

When stressed, the body’s natural inclination is to move. Many of us, however, don’t have
the ability to drop everything and run around for a while to expel the excess energy. The
movement in which we do engage? Yes, you guessed it, eating… Yet another factor
contributing to weight gain due to stress.

Here’s the good news. The most effective method for stress reduction is exercise. Not only
will you be moving your body in a way that will effectively utilize the extra energy you have
from stress, but exercise also produces biochemicals which can counter some of the
negatives about high stress levels.

What’s even better? Kickboxing as exercise! Almost everyone we ask about their favorite
part of class is getting to hit the bags. I wonder why that is? It’s so cathartic. Troubles at
work? Take it out on the bag. Jerk cut you off on the way home? JAB! CROSS! HOOK!
Whether you think about someone or something (those pesky love handles) it can help
motivate and fuel you to work harder and burn more calories. The way I see it, kickboxing
kills 2 birds with 1 stone - you get to reduce your stress levels AND burn calories all while
having fun and making new friends. Sounds like winning all around to me.

Weight Loss Success Formula

Weight Loss Success Formula

Working out, healthy eating, and dedication; the most efficient formula to weight loss success!  This is always a lot easier said than done, but it’s about breaking old habits and creating new ones.  These new habits become the building blocks of an exciting new way of life.

www.ilovekickboxinggrayson.com

The working out part only takes an hour of my whole day and half of working out is just showing up.  The benefits of working out include relieving stress, improving self-confidence, boosting your energy level and of course Weight Loss!  My kickboxing program is the fast and fun way to meet these goals.

This brings us to the second part of the formula, healthy eating.  You don’t have to completely give up eating the foods you love to lose weight, just watch the portion sizes of those high calorie items.  Substitute side items for healthier alternatives, such as green beans instead of fries.  Stop “dieting” and consider making these small permanent changes as part of your healthy new lifestyle!
www.ilovemartialartsgeorgia.com

Everything comes with time and hard work, so the more dedicated you are to making your lifestyle change, the faster your weight loss results will come.  Set goals and always keep pushing yourself, and think about how much better you feel after working out and making healthy eating choices!

The infamous Baby Weight

I began my weight loss journey only a few short months ago in June 2013. Let me start from the beginning, I had my first daughter in 2008 and gained a whopping 75 pounds. On February 17, 2008 I gave birth to Alyssa Marie and weighed in at 193 lbs. Within the first month I dropped down to 177 and remained there until I got pregnant with my second daughter in 2011.

I always planned on loosing more weight before I got pregnant again, but I never could keep it off. I really watched what I ate for the majority of my second pregnancy, determined to not gain as much as I did the first time. On June 21, 2012 I gave birth to Ava Madison and weighed 210 lbs.  That was more than I ever wanted to weigh. Being over 200 lbs was scary for me. I needed to do something about it fast.

Having two kids helped me to keep moving, but I have always struggled to eat as healthy as I should. I think that has a lot to do with why I am still holding on to my baby weight.  I have tried many different eating plans and diets, none of them stuck. I am a pretty picky eater to begin with, so the prepackaged meals were not my thing.  I love sweets and carbs, but who doesn’t? I am learning to have smaller portions of the things I love, instead of cutting out completely.

I have never been big into exercising, only doing a little here and there. I own an elliptical, treadmill and Pilate's machine. They live in my garage, out of sight out of mind. I go through spurts where I will work out hard for a few days. Then I get burned out and stop. This is how I have been exercising my entire life. I was not making any progress in my weight loss and I was becoming depressed.

A few weeks before Ava turned one, I weighed in at 190 lbs. My mother-in-law, who also struggles with weight loss, bought us a Groupon for 5 classes at ILoveKickboxing.com/Choe’s HapKiDo Grayson. She had done kickboxing years ago and loved it.  I figured it couldn’t hurt to try it out. So, I called and scheduled our first class… I knew it would be intense, but holy cow I have never worked out so hard in my life. After the first class we signed up for one year, knowing that it was going to lock us in and force us to stick with it for at least the duration of our contract.

I have continued to attend kickboxing classes 2-4 times a week, along with a slight change in my diet. I eat a salad almost every day for lunch and have cut back on my snacking at night. It has been around 4 months since I started and I now weight 170 lbs. and have dropped 3 pants sizes. I don’t weigh myself on a weekly basis,  it’s more like once a month. I actually don’t own a scale. My main goals are dropping dress sizes, becoming stronger and living healthier life style for myself and my family.

Exercise and Happiness

Exercise and happiness

Have you ever looked at everyone at the end of a high energy fitness class? Most people look like they can barely move another muscle, their body is tired, and sometimes they can barely stand up…. But almost everyone seems to have a bright and happy smile on their face! Why is this?

I am a Martial Arts and Fitness Kickboxing Instructor and I have taught and taken many types of fitness classes, and it seems that there are a lot of happy people that are involved in fitness activities. One big part of this is that when you exercise it releases endorphins and chemicals in your body like dopamine. These chemicals stimulate receptors in your brain and nervous system, making you feel good!

Also most fitness classes are goal oriented! Most people don’t just “go work out”…. There is a reason. Mostly for toning, health, and weight loss. People that are actively pursuing their goals and seeing results as they move closer to them, have a great feeling of confidence. A person that is not improving or making progress in any part of their life, may not have much reason to be happy. But someone who goes to the gym and is meeting small goals towards improving their health or weights loss has huge reason to be happy. Not only will this happiness follow into other areas of a person’s life, so will the effort. If you feel better you make more goals, and try harder in every aspect of your life. It’s kind of a snowball effect

Another main reason why people involve in these programs are so happy, is because they meet a lot of really cool people that share the same goal as them! In Martial Arts we say that a family is a group of people united by a common goal! So when you come to class, feel like you’re in a family atmosphere, and make great friend, you are bound to be happy. The friends that you make also help to hold you more accountable, so you are more likely to reach your goals that you set, and make it to class more, which means the snowball is still getting bigger

If you are interested in finding out more of the benefits of being healthy and active, please follow the links below, and if we can’t help you personally reach your fitness goals, then we would be happy to help you find someone who will!
